They would participate in the meeting, in addition to the president of the Broad Front, Fernando Pereira; the president of the Directory of the National Party, Pablo Iturralde; the general secretary of the Colorado Party, Julio María Sanguinetti; the president of Cabildo Abierto, Guillermo Domenech; and the leader of the Independent Party, Pablo Mieres.
The conclave would take place next week, in the Legislative Palace.
Pereira expressed to Underlined in a first exchange they will talk about the strengthening of political parties and democratic coexistence.
Law of political parties and democracy
He explained that one of the topics that will be analyzed during the party leaders’ meeting is: the need to “go towards an exclusively public financing Law for political parties, and see if it can be approved in this period or in the subsequent period.” .
Pereira said that the case of the Uruguayan drug trafficker Sebastián Marset must be addressed, because all the political parties insisted that it had nothing to do with the link between drug trafficking and the parties. He remarked that the case “aroused an alert that the Minister of National Defense, Javier García, published on his Twitter account that measures had to be taken to prevent this from happening in the future.”
Regarding democratic coexistence, Pereira pointed out that at times the spirits are tense.
“Uruguayan society is not similar to Argentine society in terms of the political bond. Political leaders can talk, converse, call each other and get together. We will see what the levels of agreement are, but it is a very important sign that the parties of the coalition and the Broad Front have an exchange to think about some issues”, pointed out the president of the Broad Front.
The proposal arose after strong political confrontations at the parliamentary level and due to the actions of the government, but also at a time when the Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, revealed that he was the victim of a death threat, from prison, after the attempt to assassination against the vice president of Argentina, Cristina Fernández.
