The Broad Front (FA) on Monday ruled out requesting the resignation of deputy Gerardo Núñez (Communist Party) after a court ruling against him following a complaint of sexual abuse. The political force decided to pass the case to its Court of Political Conduct, which will study it.
“These issues must be approached with great care, great respect and respecting all positions, including those dictated by the Uruguayan Justice,” said the president of the Broad Front, Fernando Pereira, at a press conference.
While the investigation of the facts continues, Núñez will not occupy his seat in Deputies, confirmed Pereira. However, “as a militant, he is not going to stop being a soldier,” he clarified. “It’s logical. What you have to do with people, in the event that they have made mistakes (…), is to make amends. But does making amends mean stopping working and being in the military? In any case, it means reflecting, and that the partner has done with us”.
The communist deputy was intimidated by the legal judge Karen Cuadrado to enroll in a program for men who exercise violence. Núñez had been denounced for abuse on the Varones Uruguay Instagram account in January, and last Friday the hearing took place in which the complaint was “ratified and expanded” by the complainant.
Pereira said that the issue should be analyzed in depth, but “without superficiality” or exerting pressure on the Justice. “I understand that a deep look is put into these issues within the FA because it was the one that set the bar high. And since it set it high, it takes a set of measures consistent with the judicial rulings, with the laws that Uruguay approved and with what what a political force has to do when it has a difficulty of this type”,
Asked about the possibility of asking Núñez for the bench while he remains on the sidelines, he replied: “If the issue is in the Court of Political Conduct, God will not be the president of the FA. In the FA there is no God; the president does not take nor put anyone, the agencies decide. As president, there is a case of complaint, (in which) the justice decides that there be a distance of 500 meters for six months and some measures for the parties. Deputy Núñez is going to comply and based on that I think he is doing the right thing and so is the FA”.
