It is not the first time that the Broad Front has questioned the management of Francisco Bustillo at the head of the Foreign Ministry. The deputy of the Broad Front Daniel Caggiani, that Bustillo is a “minister without portfolio” and a “minister who does not command”, after summoning him last Friday 25 to Parliament. In that instance, the legislator said that Uruguay has not yet signed a trade agreement with the Fiji Islands.

Added to this criticism was Uruguay’s attitude towards the OAS at a time when Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine was being analyzed.

The OAS issued a statement in which it “strongly condemns the unjustified and unprovoked illegal invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation” and calls for the immediate withdrawal of the military presence and the cessation of any other military action in that country.

However, in the first instance, Uruguay did not sign said declaration. The Foreign Ministry said that through various pronouncements, it had already expressed its “clear condemnation of the violation of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine by military forces of the Russian Federation.”

But, after that, the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, ordered the Uruguayan delegation to the OAS to change their position and sign the declaration.

to the lurches

As a result of this, Caggiani questioned that foreign policy cannot be led to “lurches”.

He stated that the fact that the president intervenes by making the Foreign Ministry change its position “ends up being a piece of paper for our country. It seems that they bullied the minister.”

From the National Party it was said that everything happened while the chancellor was in Parliament providing information on trade agreements in the country.
