Bridges of Love: Cuba regains joy

In Cuba there is a recovery of joy, of the people, who have hope translated into a commitment to life, Carlos Lazo, coordinator of the Puentes de Amor solidarity project, said today.

The Cuban activist residing in the United States told Radio Miami that there are reasons for the celebration on November 15, the day the island reopened its borders to international travelers and the school year was restarted.

It gives me great satisfaction to see this after so many months of Covid-19, of so many sanctions by Donald Trump, continued by Joe Biden to suffocate Cuban families, said Professor Lazo from Washington state.

He commented that the control of the pandemic on the island is encouraging, that children go back to schools and that Cuban science was able to obtain five vaccine candidates, three of them vaccines, which have a lot to do with advances in the fight against the Covid-19.

It is a day of celebration, a new normal and we will embrace our family again, Lazo said, reiterating the importance of building bridges of love between the peoples of the two shores.

A number of people expressed the desire for normalization, that the sanctions be lifted, “enough is enough, how far will this be,” he asked.

He commented that at the beginning of November he returned from a trip to the Caribbean country, where he was accompanying a load of 18 thousand pounds of food donations.

On that occasion, he said, I observed Cuban families in the streets, visiting businesses, I saw the Malecón and Old Havana and it gave me a lot of satisfaction, it was different from what I appreciated in August (one of the hardest months regarding the impact of the Covid-19).

He recalled that Cuba in the midst of this global emergency did not only for its people but for the world and that now its vaccines will be able to reach many.

He regretted that more than eight thousand people died in Cuba due to Covid-19, but warned that it is one of the countries least hit by the pandemic.

He stressed that life was given priority on the island despite the economic cost of not opening the economy.

Puentes de Amor is one of the most activist organizations within the United States in favor of lifting the blockade and for the end of the sanctions that weigh on the Cuban people.

On July 25, during a sit-in in front of the White House, at the end of a 2,000-kilometer walk between Miami, Florida, and Washington, DC, the project delivered a petition backed by more than 27,000 signatures asking Biden fulfill his campaign promise and alleviate the suffering of Cuban families.
