MIAMI, United States. – Brian A. Nichols, the United States Undersecretary of State for the Western Hemisphere, assured this Tuesday that the Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, was lying when he accused Washington of “direct involvement” in the historic 9/11 protests. July 2021.
“The accusation is false. What happened on 11J was because the Cuban people are dissatisfied with the lack of basic rights in Cuba, the systematic abuses of the regime, the lack of food, freedoms, medicine,” Nichols said in a conference with various media outlets, according to the report of Cuban Journal.
Nichols also said that Cubans “are living under a regime that does not attend to their most basic needs and, more importantly, does not fulfill its constitutional and universal commitments. The United States has nothing to do with what happened and they know it perfectly well. That is why yesterday they were lying to try to eliminate their responsibilities, ”he added.
“They are afraid of their own citizens and that’s why they don’t want them to talk, to leave the country or to enter the country. (…) If the regime wants to be accepted as a legitimate government, it must guarantee the freedoms that are in the Cuban Constitution”, he also pointed out.
The US official said the island regime was trying to justify “draconian sentences by falsely claiming” that the protests were “largely violent.”
“They have invented false charges, like sedition,” he added.
“This weekend we saw the regime deploying police and military throughout the country to intimidate citizens not to mobilize around the 9/11 anniversary date,” Nichols said.
“The Government of the United States supports the right of Cubans and peoples around the world to exercise their freedoms of expression,” he declared.
He also emphasized the Biden administration’s commitment to the people of the island and the Cuban-American community to increase consular services, facilitate travel, increase support for independent entrepreneurs, among other points of interest.
“We have to see in our policies how we can support the Cuban people, who are in a humanitarian crisis right now. We do not see fair that innocent people suffer in this way. For this we seek to facilitate the arrival of humanitarian assistance to the Island, facilitate communications between families in the United States and their relatives in Cuba. (…) We also have to make sure that this aid does not benefit the Cuban regime,” he said.
“The United States will continue to seek to support the Cuban people and will promote accountability for the repression and violation of human rights by the Cuban regime,” he added.
