Brian Nichols affirms that he is "outraged" by the violation of human rights in Nicaragua

The United States Undersecretary of State for the Office of Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian Nichols, expresses that he feels “outraged” at the lack of respect for human rights on the part of the Daniel Ortega dictatorship in Nicaragua.

Nichols celebrated that the United States has joined an “overwhelming majority of members in a resolution that condemns the continuing human rights abuses in Nicaragua” during the 52nd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), held in Lima, Peru .

Given this, the US official affirms that in the Joe Biden administration “we continue to be outraged by the Ortega regime’s contempt for the rights of its people.”

During the Assembly, the resolution on “the political and human rights crisis in Nicaragua” was approved, which is based on nine points, including the cessation of repression against citizens and the full restoration of civic and political rights, the release of political prisoners and the guarantee of the right to religious freedom.

The organization shared its “deep concern” over the continued deterioration of the human rights situation in Nicaragua, referring to the multiple arbitrary arrests, imprisonment of political figures, the forced closure of civil society organizations and universities, the seizure of offices municipal authorities, the repression of journalists and raids on media organizations, and the intimidation of community leaders committed by the Ortega regime.

Likewise, within its concern, the Assembly proposed the arrest of Monsignor Rolando Álvarez along with other religious; as well as the oppression, criminalization, harassment, police harassment and acts of repression that the Nicaraguan dictatorship has perpetrated against members of the Catholic Church.

Nichols has also rejected the insults of the regime against the international human rights organizations that have been an important part in the denunciation against “the actions of the Ortega-Murillo regime. The UN, the Human Rights Council, the OAS (Organization of American States), the Inter-American Court (of human rights), all have denounced, “said the US official recently.
