Through Twitter, the American official expressed that “The US supports those who courageously defend Venezuelan democracy. New attacks against the opposition, including against members of the Assembly (2015), prevent democratic solutions for Venezuela. Efforts must focus on a path to free and fair elections in 2024.”

Due to this pronouncement, Foreign Minister Gil said that if the United States defended Venezuelan democracy, “it would have lifted the coercive measures and returned to the State the assets and resources that belong to the people.”

On the contrary, he believes that “he defends a criminal operation to loot the country disguised as an institution, which does not even exist,” he said on his Twitter account.

“Regarding our approach to Nicolás Maduro, has not changed. He is illegitimate. We support the 2015 National Assembly as the only vestige of democracy in Venezuela”, he reaffirmed.
