A survey carried out by Procon-SP in bakeries in the capital of São Paulo and ten other cities in the state of São Paulo pointed out that the The price of breakfast can weigh heavily on the consumer’s pocket, depending on the establishment chosen.
THE brioche breadfor example, can cost up to five times more if purchased in two different bakeries in the city of São José dos Campos: in one of them, the product was sold for R$16while the lowest value found in the city was R$2.50. This means a 540% variation in the price of the product depending on where the item was purchased.
THE brewed coffeein turn, had a variation of 151%being found in Presidente Prudente by a average price of R$3.83while in the capital the same item has a average cost of R$9.61. Already the cheese bread had a variation of 118%with the highest average prices found in the capital of São Paulo (R$ 9.44) and the lowest in Presidente Prudente (R$ 4.33).
A kilo of Brazilians’ favorite bread, French, also showed price variations – including in the same city. In the east zone of the capital of São Paulo, for example, it can be purchased, on average, for R$23.29, while in the west zone the price rises to R$24.35.
The bread and butter combo on the grill accompanied by brewed coffee was the one that fluctuated the most among the combined items: 27% difference between the neighborhoods of São Paulo.
In Bauru, the cheese bread and brewed coffee combo was the champion of variation between the combined items, with a difference of more than 200%, costing R$14 in one of the bakeries analyzed and R$4.60 in another.
The research was carried out between the 23rd and 26th of September. In the capital of São Paulo alone, 50 bakeries were visited, in all regions of the city. The survey was also carried out in the cities of Presidente Prudente, Araçatuba, São José dos Campos, Ribeirão Preto, São José do Rio Preto, Bauru, Sorocaba, Santos, São Vicente and Campinas.
According to Procon, the consumer must always be aware of the price, expiration date, weight and ingredients of the products that are manufactured in the bakery itself. Prices, for example, must be clearly displayed. If there is a difference between the value displayed on the shelf and the value at the checkout, the lower price applies. Procon also warns that the French bread must be sold by weight and that establishments must not impose a minimum value for card purchases.
If the consumer has problems with prices or service, they can register a complaint through website www.procon.sp.gov.br. Other irregularities must be reported to the municipality’s Health Surveillance.
