During the early hours of this Friday 20 of Decembera rupture was recorded in the land emissary located at the height of the Tierra Baja district, in Cartagena, which generated multiple damages to homes and businesses in the area. This system, responsible for moving wastewater to the seabed, suffered damage, causing streets and properties to be flooded with contaminated water.

In conversation with RCN Radio, Manuel Vicente Barrera, manager of Aguas de Cartagena, the company in charge of the operation of the outfall, reported that the competent authorities, such as the EPA and the District Risk Attention System, have already been notified to address the emergency.
“At around two in the morning we were notified of damage to the land outfall that carries wastewater from the Paraíso Station to our Punta Canoa pretreatment plant, near the Tierra Baja district. All operational action was immediately activated. of the company, the crews were sent, the crisis committee was activated due to the environmental impacts that this has, the management was carried out to communicate it to the Environmental Public Space (EPA), to the District Administrative Department of Health (DADIS), to Cardique alsopumping from the Paraíso Station to the Punta Canoa pretreatment plant was suspended,” Barerra indicated.

He also added that, “at this moment several actions are being carried out, there is an issue of decontamination, fumigation, damage assessment, evaluation of the affected houses and of course we are already activating the yellow machinery to go in to identify the damage and its repair.
In addition, the official added that a statement will be issued later in the morning with details of the damage. For their part, residents of the area recorded on video the serious damage to homes and businesses, which were flooded with sewage water.
RCN Radio learned that the Fire Department and the Cartagena Water crew are already on the scene attending to the emergency and that the water that was in the streets went down. However, decontamination is expected to avoid an impact on public health.
