Brazil’s proximity to China does not affect relations with the US, says Padilha

Government makes agreement to set up commissions of 4 MPs

The minister of the Institutional Relations Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, Alexandre Padilha, said this Friday (14th) that the proximity of the Brazilian government to China does not affect the relationship with the United States. According to him, Brazilian foreign policy has always focused on multilateralism, especially with the attitude of the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“In the eight years he ruled the country, he expanded Brazil’s multipolar role without ever affecting any relationship with the United States. Brazil expanded its foreign trade to other regions of the world during President Lula’s eight years, reduced dependence on foreign trade with the American economy, but at the same time the relationship with the American economy grew in that period”, said Padilha, after participating in a meeting with leaders and CEOs associated with Amcham Brasil (Chamber of Commerce of America), in the capital paulista.

According to the minister, it is very important, in global terms, that there are global actors who are not restricted to a certain polarization between the two points of politics and the economy in the world. Padilha added that it is good for everyone that Brazil is a country well received both in the US and in China, being able to maintain cooperation agendas with both.

fiscal framework

Asked about the progress of the fiscal framework project, Padilha said that the formation of two different blocs in the Chamber of Deputies has a positive impact not only on this proposal, but also on the governance environment, because both are not blocs in opposition to the government. “On the contrary, they are led by parliamentarians who defend the government. Both have been very important and with a very collaborative attitude with the government. We have been able to approve everything the government needed in the Chamber and in the Senate, knowing that it will always be a dialog environment.”

Padilha stressed that the issue is not something that divides government and opposition and that dialogues on the subject can continue even with Lula and Finance Minister Fernando Haddad out of the country. According to him, there should not be significant changes in the project, since the bases have already been presented by Haddad, who is leading the debate, but there may be adjustments in the text. “Which will be delivered and signed by Lula and Haddad and the ministers who contributed to the preparation when they return. I believe that, with their return at the beginning of the week, we can forward it as quickly as possible.”

The minister pointed out that the government will work to approve the fiscal framework as quickly as possible, since its approval will expand the environment that contributes to a downward trend in interest rates, as well as influencing both the Budget Guidelines Law and the budget item that should be forwarded at the beginning of the second semester.

The complementary bill of the new fiscal framework will be sent to Congress on Monday (17), according to the Minister of Planning and Budget, Simone Tebet. According to her, the Ministries of Planning and Finance will take advantage of the weekend to make the final adjustments to the text.
