Brazilians think the economy could be devastated by climate events

Research by Instituto Climainfo shows that 91% of Brazilians believe that the impacts on the Brazilian economy will be devastating if climate events worsen. The survey, released this Thursday (14), interviewed 2 thousand people.Brazilians think the economy could be devastated by climate events

The survey also shows that 79% of respondents want Brazil to lead the energy transition in the world. For 64%, Brazil should focus its economic development efforts towards eliminating the production and consumption of fossil fuels. A larger percentage – 73% – believe that stopping climate change should be a government priority. Almost all people interviewed (97%) support the end of deforestation by 2030.

According to the survey, 81% of respondents incorrectly believe that deforestation is the main cause of global climate change; 72% think companies that produce fossil fuels, such as oil or gas, can be held responsible for climate extremes; and 71% believe it is possible to stop burning fossil fuels by 2050.

“Numerous opinion polls have already shown that Brazilians recognize that the climate is changing due to human action. What is surprising about this survey is the high percentage of respondents who recognize that the main cause of climate change is the burning of fossil fuels and the understanding that the energy transition can be an economic opportunity for Brazil”, highlighted the director of Instituto ClimaInfo , Delcio Rodrigues.

Data collection was carried out on the Pollfish Platform on July 15, 2024, in format onlineand was attended by approximately 2 thousand people. The survey’s margin of error is 2%.
