The judge of the Federal Supreme Court of Brazil, Alexandre de Moraes, ordered the suspension of the messaging application Telegramfollowing a request from the country’s federal police, local news networks reported this Friday TV Globe and CNN Brazil.
Telegram is one of the main social networks used by the far-right Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro and their allies.
Telegram, already installed in 53% of Brazilian cell phones, does not collaborate with the authorities. On its website, it boasts of “ensuring that no government or like-minded bloc of countries can invade the privacy and freedom of expression people”, and has been subject to bans or restrictive measures in several countries, including India and Russia.
Unlike other applications, it allows groups of up to 200,000 people, unlimited user channels and practically no content moderation, so the potential for content to go viral is infinite.
