Education units across the country can register, starting this Wednesday (4), students from the 6th year of primary school to the 3rd year of secondary school in the 21st edition of the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (Obmep). 
Registration is made exclusively by schools in the Obmep pageuntil March 16. Municipal, state and federal public institutions, as well as private institutions, can participate.
Scholarships
The initiative of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa) has resources from the Ministry of Education (MEC) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). This year’s edition will distribute 8,450 national medals, 650 gold, 1,950 silver and 5,850 bronze, in addition to 51,000 honorable mention certificates.
According to the organizers, the competition annually brings together more than 18.5 million students from all regions of Brazil.
Nationally awarded students are invited to participate in the Jr. Scientific Initiation Program (PIC), which encourages academic development and offers a scholarship of R$300, through the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), to students from public schools participating in the program.
In addition to the national award, Obmep also recognizes the students with the best performance in each state. At least 20,500 state medals will be distributed – but they do not give access to the PIC.
Evidence
The Olympics takes place in two phases. The first consists of an objective test with 20 questions, administered by the school itself on June 9th. The best placed students will be classified for the second stage, which takes place on October 17th.
At this stage, it is applied in the centers defined by the organization of the Olympics. The test consists of six discursive questions, prepared according to the students’ level of education.
Students are distributed into three levels: the first comprises students in the 6th and 7th years of primary school, the second is for those studying in the 8th and 9th year, level 3, for secondary education.
