The first day of competitions at the European Warsaw Judo Open, Poland, was good news for Brazil’s judo. And more specifically for the female half-home category (up to 78 kg). This Saturday (22), Karol Gimenes secured Silver and Beatriz Freitas, the bronze.
Karol won four wins (two by Ippon, one by Waza-Ari and one for punishments in the Golden Score) until he reached the grand final of the category. Faced with German Julie Hoelterhoff, she was defeated when she suffered a Waza-Ari near the end of the combat, not having enough time to react and match the scoring. It was her debut in the season.
Beatriz, who was on the other side of the key, was defeated by German Lea Schid (who later faced Karol in the semifinal) in the quarterfinals. This way she needed to go through the recap to have a chance to win the bronze.
And that’s what she did: he went first for Australian Maria Swan (another that had been defeated by Karol) and then broke the Frenchman Kaila Issoufi in the direct dispute for third place.
This Sunday, there will be four more Brazilians participating in Open de Warsaw: among women, Clarice Ribeiro will fight in the category up to 48 kg. In the male, the representatives of Brazil will be Kauan dos Santos (81kg), Guilherme Morais (90kg) and Wilgner Mendes (100kg).
