Built for the cycling events of the Rio 2016 Olympics, the Velodrome in the wonderful city opened the door to another sport this Monday (4): the Brazilian Elite Boxing Championship. The men’s and women’s disputes will bring together 173 athletes from all over the country, among them, exponents such as Beatriz Ferreira (silver at the Tokyo Games and current world runner-up in the 60 kg), Keno Marley (runner-up in the 86 kg world), and Abner Teixeira, bronze in Tokyo, in the 90 kg. The competition runs until Sunday (10). 
The fights start at 2:30 pm (Brazilian time), in rings inside the Velodrome, in the Olympic Park, in the west of Rio. Entrance is free, subject to online registration. The fights are also broadcast live on YouTube gives Brazilian Boxing Confederation (CBBoxe). The schedule and results are published daily, after 10:30 pm, on the entity’s website.
Rio hosts 1st International Boxing Grand Prix
Next week, starting on the 14th, the Olympic Park Velodrome will host the 1st International Grand Prix, with 52 athletes from countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Panama, Paraguay and Ecuador, among others. There will be 13 weight categories, between men and women.
After the two major events, Marcos Cândido de Brito, president of CBBoxe, sees the possibility of the Olympic Park hosting an event in the qualifying calendar for the 2024 Paris Games in 2023.
“We want to create a virtuous circle. This presence of reference events encourages kids, technicians and projects to develop. With that, more athletes gain the conditions to have a selection level and compete internationally and Brazil can only win”, said the leader in a statement to the Ministry of Citizenship.
