Brazil’s ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Sergio Danese, criticized this Tuesday (24), during a Security Council meeting, the United States’ military action against Venezuela.
For the Brazilian representative, the North American actions are “violations of the Charter of the United Nations and, therefore, must cease immediately and unconditionally in favor of the use of widely available political and legal instruments”.
Danese said that Brazil “invites both countries to a genuine dialogue, conducted in good faith and without coercion”. The ambassador also added that President Lula has already declared that he intends to broker an agreement between the USA and Venezuela and that he supports any efforts by the UN Secretary General in this direction.
The ambassador also added that South America is and wants to remain a region of peace, “respecting international law and with good relations between neighbors”.
For the Brazilian ambassador, avoiding a war on the continent is not just an interest of Latin American countries, the entire international community has to be concerned “since, ultimately, a conflict in the region could have repercussions on a global scale”.
The United States, through orders from President Donald Trump, promotes a military siege on Venezuela. The Americans intend to remove Nicolás Maduro from power, whom they accuse of heading a narco-terrorist cartel. Trump has been threatening to invade Venezuelan territory for weeks.
