MIAMI, United States – The Brazilian airline Gol has requested a new international route to connect Brasília with Havana, with a stopover at El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, according to a report by the state agency Prensa Latina, which cites Colombia’s Civil Aviation Authority.
Gol would operate the route between “Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek” International Airport in Brasília and “José Martí” International Airport in Havana, with seven weekly frequencies.
It was also reported that it would use Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft for this operation, with a capacity of 186 seats distributed in 30 business class seats and 156 economy class seats.
At the end of 2015, Gol began flying between the Brazilian city of São Paulo and Havana, with a stopover in Aruba, according to a report that year by the Cuban News Agency (ACN). Currently, however, Gol does not operate any flights to or with a stopover in Cuba.
In recent years, several airlines have stopped flying to the Island, citing that operations are not profitable.
In June of this year, Bolivia’s national airline, Boliviana de Aviación (BoA), announced that it would suspend its flights between Santa Cruz de la Sierra (VVI) and Havana (HAV) starting Thursday, July 25, just nine months after the route was inaugurated.
According to the website AviationOnlineSince October 2023, the Bolivian state airline had operated a weekly flight between the South American country and the Island using Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
In March of this year, Aerolíneas Argentinas also canceled its weekly route to Havana, a decision driven by the lack of profitability of this connection.
According to sources close to the company cited by the Argentine media outlet InfobaeDuring 2023 this route resulted in losses of half a million dollars. Additionally, it was noted that the decision was made after a “commercial analysis that seeks to protect and enhance the company, as well as to strengthen and prioritize the destinations that are most economically beneficial.”
After an eight-year suspension, Aerolíneas Argentinas had resumed the Buenos Aires-Havana route with three weekly frequencies starting in July 2022.
Additionally, it was revealed last month that the Colombian airline Avianca would not resume its Bogotá-Havana route due to “operational issues.”
