Brazil will reestablish relations with Venezuela from January 1

Brazil will reestablish relations with the Government of Venezuela as of January 1, the future Brazilian foreign minister, Mauro Vieira, said on Wednesday.

The future foreign minister said that the president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, instructed him to restore relations with Venezuela.

“We will do it on January 1 by sending a business manager to reopen the embassy and later appoint an ambassador,” Vieira said at a brief press conference, according to the EFE news agency.

Vieira stressed that Brazil will restore relations “with the government that is elected there, that of Nicolás Maduro,” said the delegate.

Lula, elected president on October 30, does not rule out that President Maduro may attend his inauguration scheduled for January 1 despite the ban on entry to the country for senior Venezuelan officials, adopted by the government of the far-right Jair Bolsonaro .
