The Brazilian military leadership has informed President Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva about the needs of the country’s Armed Forces in the context of a new geopolitical situation, according to media reports in that country.
The president of the South American giant met last Thursday with the commanders of the three branches of the Armed Forces and the Minister of Defense, José Múcio, at the Planalto Palace to address the strategic situation of the nation.
This is the first formal consultation with these military leaders after the United States intervention in Venezuela on January 3.
This topic was a central part of the conversation, which lasted two hours, according to the newspaper O Globo.
During the meeting, the senior officers spoke with President Lula da Silva about the vulnerabilities that currently exist in the military forces and the urgency of updating their response capabilities.
In this sense, Army Commander Tomás Paiva pointed out that Brazil needs to strengthen its anti-aircraft defense, invest in a fleet of state-of-the-art drones and modernize military helicopters.
For his part, Marcos Olsen, commander of the Navy, highlighted the importance of modernization with regard to aircraft, submarines and other naval equipment essential for the security of the territory.
