The Brazilian government has called the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the tariff measures imposed by the United States against products produced in Brazil. In the assessment of Itamaraty, the US “flagrantly violated” commitments made with the WTO itself.
“By imposing the aforementioned measures, the US violates the central commitments made by that country in the WTO, such as the most favored nation principle and the tariff ceilings negotiated in that organization,” the Ministry of Foreign Ministry said.
The document sent to the WTO is a request for consultations to the US, an instrument established for the purpose of enabling the parties a negotiated solution for the dispute before the eventual establishment of a panel.
It is, therefore, a first formal step within the dispute solution system in the WTO.
In this document, the Brazilian government reiterated its willingness to negotiate again. He expects consultations to contribute to a solution to the issue. The date and site of the consultations must be agreed between the two parts in the coming weeks.
