The Brazilian national team thrashed Argentina 4-0 this Saturday in group B of the Copa América Femenina Colombia 2022, in the first step in its search for the eighth championship of the competition.
A Canarinha with fresh faces prevailed at the Centennial Stadium in the city of Armenia with a brace from Adriana (28′ and 57′) in addition to goals from Zaneratto (36′) and Debinha (87′).
Adriana, Zaneratto and Debinha are part of the calls by the Swedish coach Pia Sundhage to lead a generation that takes responsibility to replace the successful Marta, Formiga and Cristiane.
Marta, a seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, was left out of the squad due to a serious left knee injury at the age of 36.
Formiga (44), retired from the national team since 2021, and Cristiane (37), not taken into account by the DT, also do not make up the list that traveled to Colombia. The absence of the trio that led Brazil in the last two decades marks the path of the Canarinha in the tournament.
The result of the ‘South American superclassic’ this time was bitter for Argentina, the only team other than Brazil to have won a Women’s Copa América (at home in 2006).
On Tuesday, Brazil will take the field again against Uruguay, which earlier lost 1-0 to Venezuela, and Argentina will face Peru, which has yet to make its debut.
