The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, discussed this Saturday (28) with the Foreign Minister of Lebanon, Abdallah Bou Habib, the situation of Brazilians living in the country and a possible repatriation plan amid the escalation of conflicts in the region.
The meeting took place in New York, where Mauro Vieira and Abdallah Bou Habib are participating in the United Nations General Assembly.
In a note, Itamaraty reported that the conversation between the foreign ministers addressed the recent air attacks carried out by Israel on Lebanese territory and the impacts of this scenario on the Brazilian community living in the country.
“Mauro Vieira informed the Lebanese chancellor about the work of the embassy [do Brasil] in Beirut for assistance and guidance to the community and recommendations linked to the security situation in that country”, highlighted the ministry, in a post on the Bluesky social network.
The largest community of Brazilians living in the Middle East is currently in Lebanon. In total, 21 thousand Brazilians live in the country. Lebanese immigration to Brazil is also strong. It is estimated that 3.2 million Lebanese or Lebanese descendants live in Brazil.
Syria
Itamaraty sources informed the Brazil Agency that, in addition to Lebanon, the Brazilian government is also talking to Syria about the possible repatriation of Brazilians affected by the growing conflicts in the region.
This Saturday (28), Israel confirmed that the head of the Palestinian group Hamas in Syria, Ahmad Muhammad Fahd, was killed during an attack Israeli this Friday (27).
“The terrorist was eliminated while planning to carry out an imminent terrorist attack,” the Israeli Armed Forces said in the note.
