Five Brazilian pairs will compete in the round of 16 of the Beach Volleyball World Championship in Adelaide (Australia). Four of them sealed the classification in the early hours of this Wednesday (19): Thâmela and Vic; Carol Solberg and Rebeca; Evandro and Arthur Lanci; and André and Renato. On Tuesday (18), Olympic champions Ana Patrícia had already sealed their place in the next phase. George and Saymon said goodbye to the competition after defeat in the first game of the knockout stage. The round of 16 games will take place from midnight (Brasília time) this Thursday (20), with online live streaming on Volleyball World TV.
The first Brazilians to enter the court this morning, André and Renato came out on top against the Austrians Hammarberg and Berger: they won by 2 sets to 0, with splits of 21/15 and 21/14. The next opponents will be the Swedes Hölting Nilsson and Andersson.
Next, Evandro and Arthur Lanci took the lead against New Zealanders Fuller and O’Dea. The Brazilians closed the first set at 21/15, but conceded a draw in the following set at 17/21. The third and decisive set was the closest: Evandro and Arthur saved three match points before winning the partial 25 to 23 and the match 2 sets to 1. In the round of 16, they will face the pair Krattiger and Dillier, from Switzerland.
“AND, [a vitória] It gives morale to our team, and certainly for the next games, we’re already going through this moment, yeah… we’ll be a little calmer in that sense. But man, a win is a win, with a tie-break of that. Everyone liked the game, the fans liked it, they were amazed by the match, and that’s what’s important too, is putting on a show for the people who are here watching”, analyzed Arthur Lanci.
Those who also fought on the court to get the ranking were the duo Thâmela and Vic, number one in the world rankings. French opponents Placette and Richard got the better of the first set by 21 to 17. In the next part, the Brazilians reacted: they won by 15/21 and the game continued to the third and final set. In the decisive part, the French wasted a match point, the first of the match, and the Brazilians took the opportunity to take the lead 19/17 and win the comeback by 2 sets to 1. In the next phase, the Amarelinha duo will face the Ukrainians Lazarenko and Romaniuk.

“So I think the secret was for us to always keep our thoughts positive, right? It was like I said, this is a special championship, a very difficult championship, where every game is a game, every game is played. And I think the difference is that you keep a positive mind that it’s going to work out. And I think we’re managing to do that well”, said Vic.
In the morning, Carol and Rebecca had no difficulty overcoming the Australians Fleming and Fejes by 2 sets to 0 (21/14 and 21/18). In the round of 16, the Brazilians will face the Germans Ittlinger and Grüne.
