Brazil maintains constant presence and operations on its border with the aim of preserving national sovereignty and preventing the country from being dragged into external disputes, said the Minister of Defense
Brazil’s Minister of Defense, José Múcio, said on Friday, September 5 that his government closely follows the tension escalation between the US and Venezuela, but will not take sides in the conflict.
He pointed out that the Brazilian armed forces maintain constant operations on the border because it is concerned that the region becomes “a trench.”
In this regard, he said that the military presence in the region aims to preserve national sovereignty and prevent the country from being dragged into external disputes.
«This is like a fight between neighbors. I do not want them to touch my wall or change the wiring that illuminates the front of my house. We hope this happens. Obviously, they must have their reasons, ”the minister told the press after a lunch of the commanders of the armed forces with the Brazilian president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Since the tensions between Venezuela and the United States, leaders of the region have set a position on the conflict. This Friday, about twenty of the 33 countries that make up the community of Latin American and Caribbean states (CELAC) expressed its “deep concern” against the “extra-regional” military deployment, referring to the latest maneuvers of the United States Army in the area, in particular, in the waters of the Caribbean near the coast of Venezuela.
The resolution was disseminated by the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, who stressed that “the vast majority of CELAC members sign for peace in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
The president reported that it is not an official statement of the agency since “a minority opposed”: Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Jamaica, Paraguay, Peru and Trinidad and Tobago.
