The Brazilian government released on Thursday (13) a document that synthesizes the priorities of its presidency ahead of the BRICS. It was made available in the newly launched website which brings together the schedule of activities planned for 2025 and information about the bloc, which is made up of emerging countries and focused on sustainable socioeconomic development.
Two priorities are listed – Global South Cooperation and Partnerships for Social Development – which unfold in six central areas: Global Health Cooperation, Trade and Finance, Climate Change, Artificial Intelligence Governance, Reform of Multilateral Peace and Safety Architecture and institutional development.
One of the discussions that must gain centrality involves proposals for changes in the structure of the United Nations (UN), which Brazil has been defending in different international forums.
In the area of global health cooperation is mentioned the need for increase in investments in the area of research and production of medicines and vaccines.
Among the topics related to finances are the renovation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the climate financing agenda. The document recalls that Brazil also hosts in 2025 the 30th Conference of the parties of the United Nations Climate Convention (COP-30).
Integrity and ethical use
There is also mentions to debate on personal data protection and guarantee the integrity of information for ethical, safe, reliable and responsible use of artificial intelligence technologies.
The acronym BRICS is a junction of the first letter of each of the first five members: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. In the last two years, however, the block has been expanding and six new members have been incorporated: Arabia Saudi, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Iran. In addition, they were admitted as partner countries Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
The presidency is exercised in a rotating way. Each year, the country that leads the block organizes the dome of heads of state. In 2025, the meeting should take place in Rio de Janeiro. In the current format, it is preceded by an extensive calendar of events mobilizing different areas of block governments.
The first summit of heads of state occurred in 2009 in the city of Ecaterinburg, Russia. Since then, the meeting has always been taking place in a different country from the previous edition.
Cooperation
Brazil was headquartered on three occasions: 2010 and 2019 in Brasilia and 2014 in Fortaleza. The 2025 calendar is being organized around the motto by strengthening global southern cooperation for more inclusive and sustainable governance.
The document that lists the priorities of the Brazilian government classifies BRICS as a space for collective construction to find solutions to the challenges placed in the world and conflicts.
Concerns with the deepening of geopolitical tensions and the fragility of the current international multilateral order are recorded. “The foolish resource to unilateralism and the rise of extremism in various parts of the world threaten global stability and deepen inequalities that penalize the most vulnerable populations in different parts of the planet,” the text reports.
