Brazil inaugurated this Tuesday (12) a social participation pavilion at the 29th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP29), in Baku, Azerbaijan.Brazil opens space for social participation at COP29Brazil opens space for social participation at COP29

The space, which has as its theme Paths for Ecological Transformation, is a place for meetings, dialogues and presentation of Brazilian initiatives to combat climate change.

With the presence of the entire Brazilian delegation and an audience that completely occupied the Brazilian space, vice-president Geraldo Alckmin highlighted the country’s leading role in global debates and negotiations on climate change.

“We have the largest tropical forest in the world, we have the cleanest electrical energy in the world – 85% is hydraulic, solar, electrical and biomass energy – we have biodiesel, the best in the world – it was 10% [percentual misturado à gasolina]President Lula went to 12%, 14% and next year it will go to 15%, in addition to the fuel law of the future”, he highlighted.

Alckmin also highlighted the regulation of the carbon market in the National Congress, the reduction of deforestation in the country’s drive to eliminate the problem and the delivery of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which he considered extremely bold.

“We will go from 2.2 billion tons of CO₂ equivalent to reach the goal of 850 million tons of CO₂ equivalent in 2035.

Making a comparison with the current conference (COP29) – which gained the title of COP of financing –, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, highlighted that the actions under discussion at the meeting in Baku will lead Brazil to receive the Implementation COP (COP30).

“What is the indicator of success for this COP29, in addition to so many themes that are discussed here? It is certainly the financing mechanisms, without which, what we announce will only become statements”, he reinforced.

For the minister, the definition of climate financing is what will allow adaptation, mitigation and transformation of development models. A path that, according to Marina, has already been charted with public policies to combat fires, the implementation of the Climate Plan, the Pact for Ecological Transformation and the results achieved by the current government.

“We do not want to settle with the data achieved, we want Brazil to be the address of prosperity, but, as President Lula says, by combating inequality, prosperity, protecting biodiversity and indigenous peoples, prosperity making our country can be democratic and sustainable, dialoguing with all sectors”

About Brazilian ambition to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, which will be presented tomorrow (13) to the United Nations, at COP29 in Baku, Marina highlighted the importance of Brazil being a global reference.

“May we map the path to the transition, the end of the use of fossil fuels, the end of deforestation and so that no one is left behind”, concludes the minister.
