Brazil nears 5,000 dengue deaths in 2024

Brazil is approaching the milestone of 5,000 deaths caused by dengue fever in 2024. According to the latest update of the Arbovirus Monitoring Panel, the country has recorded 4,961 confirmed deaths from the disease. There are still 2,161 deaths under investigation. Throughout the year, 6,437,241 probable cases of dengue were reported throughout the country, which leads to a fatality rate of 0.08. The disease rate in Brazil, at this time, is 3,170.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Most cases were identified in the age group of 20 to 29 years, followed by those aged 30 to 39, 40 to 49 and 50 to 59 years. The groups least affected by the disease are those under 1 year old, those aged 80 or over and children aged 1 to 4 years.

Among the states, São Paulo has the most cases of dengue in absolute numbers, with a total of 2,062,418 cases in 2024. Next are Minas Gerais (1,696,518 cases), Paraná (643,700 cases) and Santa Catarina (363,117).

When taking into account the incidence coefficient of the disease, the Federal District appears in first place, with 9,739.1 cases for each group of 100 thousand inhabitants, followed by Minas Gerais (8,260.1 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants), Paraná (5,625.2 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants) and Santa Catarina (4,771.8 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants).
