The Federal Highway Police (Federal Highway Police, PRF) from Brazil seized this Monday more than 400 iPhone brand cell phones and more than 50 watches that entered that country from the Uruguayan city of Rivera.
The seizure occurred when the shipment was circulating inside a car on the BR 158 route in Santana do Livramento. According to the police report of the Brazilian authorities, the destination of the vehicle from Uruguay was Porto Alegre, capital of the department of Rio Grande do Sul.
The action of the PRF took place after its intelligence services received information about it. When intercepting and checking a FIAT model Uno car, the officers found a total of 438 iPhones and 56 smart watches in customs violation.
The driver of the vehicle, a 34-year-old man, acknowledged that he picked up the shipment in Rivera and that he was going to the capital of the Brazilian department. The man was arrested and referred to the judicial police.
In total, the Brazilian authorities valued the merchandise at around two million reais, about 392 thousand dollars. Both the merchandise and the car were seized at the time.
The subject was detained for embezzlement, a crime that corresponds to the smuggling of permitted products that do not go through the corresponding procedures.
