The men’s Brazilian team secured qualification to the round of 16 of the Team Table Tennis World Cup in Chengdu (China). The trio Hugo Calderano, Vitor Ishiy and Eric Jouti won this Tuesday (4) the Slovakian team by 3 sets to 0 and advanced in second place in group 6, behind Portugal. The women’s team (sisters Bruna and Giulia Takahashi, in addition to Laura Watanabe) said goodbye to the World Cup after losing to France by 3 sets to 2.

The carioca Hugo Calderano, number five in the world, although he faced a hard stop against Yang Wang, got the best: he won by 3 sets to 2 ((11/9, 9/11, 7/11, 13/11 and 11/8 ) Then it was Vitor Ishy’s turn to dispatch Jakub Zelinka, winning by three straight sets (11/8, 11/2 and 11/8). The third and last to compete was Eric Jouti, who had the best performance at the Worlds: beat Adam Klajber 3-0 ((13/11, 11/8 and 11/3).
The dispute for women’s teams started well for Brazil against France. In the first match Bruna Takahashi defeated the experienced Pauline Chasselin in straight sets (11/13, 6/11 and 6/11). In the next match, Giulia Takahashi, exponent of the Brazilian national team’s base and Bruna’s sister, couldn’t fit her game against left-handed Prithika Pavade, losing by 3 sets to 0. Afterwards, Laura Watanabe, debuting in world championships, overcame veteran Charlotte Lutz for 3 sets to 1 ((12/10, 11/4, 5/11 and 12/10).
In the fourth set, Bruna Takarashi was surpassed by Prithika Pavade, 3-1 (11/8, 14/12, 11/9 and 9/11). With the tie at 2 to 2, the last to compete was Giulia Takahashi, the youngest table tennis player in the World, who couldn’t resist Pauline Chasselin’s style of play and was surpassed in three straight sets by (9/11, 6 /11 and 8/11).
