MIAMI, United States. – Brazil said goodbye this Friday to the Soccer World Cup Qatar 2022 after losing to Croatia on penalties 4-2, after drawing 1-1. In this way, the Croatian team became the first to qualify for the semifinals.
After 1:30 in which both teams didn’t risk much, Neymar put the South Americans ahead with a great move in the 105th minute. However, the Brazil defense fell asleep in the 115th minute and Bruno Petković scored the equalizer on a counterattack.
In penalties, Rodrygo and Marquinhos missed their shots, while Croatia went on to win 4-2.
Now, the Croats must wait for the result of the clash between Argentina and the Netherlands (this same Friday) to define which will be one of their opponents in the Cup semifinals.
To date, the Croats have secured seven matches at this World Cup, just as they did at Russia 2018 when they reached the grand final.
On the other hand, two decades have passed since the last time Brazil beat a European in the quarterfinals. The event occurred in the 2002 World Cup in Korea-Japan, when Ronaldo signed a double in the 2-0 victory against Germany.
In the following four editions of the World Cup, Brazil has always lost to a European team: against France in 2006, the Netherlands in 2010, Germany in 2014 and Belgium in 2018.
