Brazil hits the first time mark of 5 million barrels of oil and gas

Brazil exceeded in July, for the first time in history, the 5 million barrels of oil and natural gas produced per day. The 5,160 million record was released on Monday (1st) by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), regulatory organ of the oil and gas industry.Brazil hits the first time mark of 5 million barrels of oil and gas

Regarding oil only, ANP’s monthly bulletin points out that production in the month was 3.959 million daily barrels, an increase of 5.4% compared to June and 22.5% before July 2024.

Natural gas production in July was 190.89 million cubic meters per day (m³/d), an expansion of 5.1% compared to June and 26.1% compared to July 2024.

Production in pre-salt fields accounted for 79.1% of the total, reaching 4.077 million barrels per day. This volume represents a high of 5.6% compared to the previous month and 24.2% compared to July 2024.

Pre-salt oil and gas were extracted from 169 wells. The most productive field is Tupi, in the Santos Basin. From there came almost 800 ml barrels per day of oil.

In individual terms, the platform that most contributed to the record of the month was the Guanabara FPSO (Platform Ship), in the shared deposit of Mero, also in the Santos Basin, with 184.3 thousand barrels of daily oil.

Origin of production

ANP explains that variations in production volume are caused by factors such as scheduled stops of platforms for maintenance, entry into wells, maintenance or cleaning wells, starting platform installation, among others.

Of all the oil produced in Brazil in July, 97.7% come from maritime fields. Regarding natural gas, 86.1% come from the seas.

Petrobras, alone or in consortium with other companies, is responsible for 89.78% of total oil and natural gas produced.

Rio de Janeiro is the main producing state, with 88% of national oil and 77% of natural gas.

According to the Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas (IBP), which represents companies in the sector, Brazil is the 8th largest oil producer in the world. The five largest producers – United States, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Canada and Iran – are responsible for half of world production.

Gas burning

In terms of gas use, ANP reports that it has reached the 97.1% mark, ie less than 3% of gas from wells is burned in the atmosphere. Most (54%) are reinjected in wells, 33% are made available to the market and 10% are used as a source of energy by the platforms themselves.
