The Brazilian under-17 women’s football team narrowly missed out on finishing the category’s World Cup on the podium. This Saturday (8), in the dispute for third place, the team was beating Mexico until stoppage time, when Evelin scored against and took the decision of final placement to penalties. After a 1-1 draw in normal time, the Mexicans scored 3-1 on penalties and took third place.
Fourth place is Brazil’s best result in the history of the competition. The final takes place this Saturday, between the Netherlands and North Korea. The World Cup is held in Morocco.
After a balanced first half, Brazil opened the scoring in the final stretch of the match. At 33 in the second half, Maria made a good move on the left, went to the baseline and played for the middle. Kaylane completed it first time into the back of the net.
The referee signaled eight minutes of stoppage time and Mexico benefited from the extended time and some Brazilian misfortune to equalize. At 50, after a free kick taken in the area, Evelin headed the ball and ended up catching goalkeeper Ana Morganti on the counter foot, scoring against. The striker, who scored the goal, was visibly shaken, even crying.
In the penalty shootout, Brazil started well, scoring with Gaby and seeing Ana Morganti save the opponent’s first penalty. However, afterwards, the roles were reversed, with the Brazilian team wasting three kicks, with Dulce Maria, Kaylane and Dany, while Mexico converted the next three, ending the dispute 3-1.
