The Brazilian Congress will open a commission next Thursday to investigate the attempted coup against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva concocted by supporters of Jair Bolsonaro, the state-run Agencia Brasil reported.
Made up of 32 members of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, the commission will have a period of 180 days for its investigations. You can submit your results to the Attorney General’s Office in order to provide evidence to the criminal process. The coup attempt occurred a week after Lula’s inauguration.
The General Prosecutor’s Office criminally charged 1,390 people for various crimes after having violently invaded the headquarters of the National Congress, the Planalto Palace (seat of the Executive Power) and the Federal Supreme Court, in the Plaza of the Three Powers of Brasilia.
The Supreme Court prosecuted 795 accused of participating in the coup attempt. Another group continues to await a vote in the coming weeks by the judges of that entity.
Until now, the main accused as a political responsible is Anderson Torres, Bolsonaro’s former Justice Minister, who was in prison for almost two months and is now under house arrest.
Torres was the Secretary of Security of Brasilia when the events occurred. He is accused of having cleared the area so that the assailants could enter public buildings without resistance.
