The Brazilian government condemned the attacks by the United States and Israel against Iranthis Saturday (28). In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed serious concern about the situation and recalled that the bombings occurred amid a negotiation process between the parties.
For Itamaraty, negotiation is the only viable path to peace, “a position traditionally defended by Brazil in the region”.
“Brazil calls on all parties to respect international law and exercise maximum restraint, in order to avoid the escalation of hostilities and ensure the protection of civilians and civil infrastructure”, says the note.
The Brazilian ambassador in Tehran, André Veras Guimarães, is in direct contact with the Brazilian community, to transmit updates on the situation and security guidelines. The other Brazilian embassies in the region also monitor developments in military actions, “with particular attention to the needs of Brazilian communities in the affected countries”.
“Brazilians are recommended to pay attention to the safety guidelines of local authorities in the countries where they live or are located”, warned Itamaraty.
Israel launched an attack against Iran early this Saturday morning (28), declaring a “special and immediate” state of emergency across the country, according to information from the news agency Reuters.
United States President Donald Trump also confirmed “major combat operations” in Iran with the aim of defending the American people by “eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime.”
On Thursday (26), Iran and the United States had resumed negotiations with the aim of finding a diplomatic solution to the long-running dispute over Iran’s nuclear program. The United States, Israel and other Western countries say the program aims to build nuclear weapons. Iran denies the accusation.
