The Brazilian women’s team (made up of Mariana D’Andrea, Lara Lima and Tayana Medeiros) secured the gold medal on the last day of the weightlifting world championships in Cairo (Egypt). With the achievement achieved this Saturday (18), the country had its best campaign in an edition of the competition with six medals in total (one gold, three silver and two bronze).
The only Brazilian gold medal in the competition came precisely on the last day of competitions, in which Mariana D’Andrea, Lara Lima and Tayana Medeiros beat the Uzbekistan team in the final by 312.94 to 214.03 points.
“I’m very happy. At the last World Cup, I had to leave before the team competition because of the loss of my father. That moment was very difficult. But now we’re here, we won our gold. [É] It is very rewarding to be part of this achievement. This medal is for my father”, declared Mariana, who had already secured a silver in the under 73 kilos category.
Best campaign in Brazil
This gold guaranteed Brazil its best campaign in the history of the competition, surpassing the record previously achieved in Dubai 2023, an opportunity in which the Brazilians reached four medals.
“This World Cup was a gateway to the Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. So, we thought about this when preparing our preparation, which was robust to offer the athletes the conditions to start this cycle well. And, again, Brazil showed its strength. In Paris 2024, we had obtained four podiums. Now, here in Cairo, there were five in the individual. We also registered a substantial increase in relation to our last participation in World Cups [Dubai 2023]. We broke three Brazilian records, four records in the Americas. We are very happy with our participation”, declared the weightlifting coordinator of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB), Murilo Spina.
