The Brazilian cinema sector broke a record for the number of cinemas operating in the country. According to the National Cinema Agency (Ancine), on January 1st of this year, the country had 3,509 theaters in operation, 31 more than recorded in 2019, before the covid-19 pandemic.
“This growth reflects a commitment to the decentralization of access to audiovisual and cultural inclusion, with accessibility solutions, reaching people with visual and hearing impairments. Monte Carmelo and Ponte Nova, in Minas Gerais, and Miracema, in Rio de Janeiro, gained their first theaters, while Viçosa, in Alagoas, celebrated the reopening of a cinema that had been closed for 30 years”, highlighted the Ministry of Culture.
The ministry also highlighted that, in 2024, 121 million people attended cinemas, and the number of viewers of Brazilian productions doubled compared to the previous year, with emphasis on the film I’m Still Herestarring Fernanda Torres, who won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama.
