Brazil assumes diplomatic representation of Peru in Venezuela

Brazil assumes diplomatic representation of Peru in Venezuela

The Peruvian government announced on Monday that it has reached an agreement with Brazil for the latter to assume the protection of its diplomatic interests in Venezuela.

In an official statement, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry announced that, as of today, Brazil will be responsible for providing consular assistance to Peruvian citizens residing in Venezuela, as well as safeguarding Peruvian diplomatic premises and assets in that country.

This agreement, which is part of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic and Consular Relations, reflects the excellent state of bilateral relations between Peru and Brazil, and comes after the acceptance of the government of Nicolás Maduro.

The decision comes amid growing political tension in Venezuela, marked by recent allegations of electoral fraud and growing international pressure on Maduro’s government.

It is worth remembering that Peru was one of the first countries to recognize Edmundo González as the elected president of Venezuela, a position that has been supported by other countries in the region and has generated greater international isolation of the Maduro regime.

Brazil’s decision to take on the protection of Peruvian interests in Venezuela adds to its role as mediator in the Venezuelan crisis. Recently, the South American giant also assumed the consular representation of Argentina in that country.
