President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke this Tuesday (13) with the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro. According to a statement from Palácio do Planalto, the two leaders expressed satisfaction with the approval of the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosurwhich should be signed on the 17th, in Paraguay. The new treaty, which took 25 years to complete its negotiations, still needs to go through a process of internalization by the signatory countries.
In the conversation with Lula, according to Planalto, the prime minister congratulated the Brazilian president for his commitment to concluding the agreement. The two also discussed the need for the new rules to come into force as quickly as possible.
“Both agreed that the decision of the two blocs is a very important gesture in defense of multilateralism and free trade, with a great political and strategic dimension at this historic moment. They agreed to work together, quickly and efficiently, to implement the agreement so that the populations can see concrete results from the partnership signed”, informed the Presidency of the Republic, in a note.
Lula and Montenegro also exchanged views on the situation in Venezuela and highlighted the need to avoid a scenario of instability in South America.
