Brazil and Indonesia sign statement and cite potential for partnerships

The governments of Brazil and Indonesia announced, this Thursday (23), joint statementon the progress of the strategic partnership between the two countries. The document, which also deals with cooperation at both regional and multilateral levels, marks the visit of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to that country.Brazil and Indonesia sign statement and cite potential for partnerships

The document contains dozens of points of consensus between Brazil and Indonesia, especially the common strategic potential between the two countries. It also reiterates its positions in favor of a “reform of international governance, peace and security”, in addition to renewing existing initiatives.

Synergy and complementarity

The two countries recognize the “significant potential for economic and business cooperation” in the most diverse areas and sectors, especially those relating to agribusiness, defense, mining, energy, health and tourism.

There are consensual points on energy transitions, biofuels, as well as the fight against criminal organizations. The document values ​​initiatives to bring together economic blocs in which they participate and South-South cooperation to promote “a fair and inclusive international order, based on international law”.

He also cites the synergy and complementarity between Brazil and Indonesia and the potential from a business and academic point of view. In this sense, it highlights areas such as education, science, technology, innovation, agriculture, environment and diversity.

Environment, fight against hunger and poverty

Concern about climate change, oceans and tropical forests is common, mentioned in the joint statement, as well as its correlations with the areas of research and space technology; sustainable development and clean and renewable energy.

As founding members of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, they reinforce their commitment to face such challenges through multilateral cooperation, recognizing that food and nutrition security is “fundamental to national stability and resilience”.

They also expressed support for the Launch Declaration of the Tropical Forests Forever Fund (TFFF), to be adopted at the Belém Climate Summit.

Reform in global governance and Gaza

Indonesia and Brazil reiterated their position in favor of an “urgent and comprehensive reform” of global governance institutions, in order to “amplify the voice of the Global South” and “unrepresented or underrepresented” regions, and specifically cites the UN Security Council for this purpose.

Finally, the document welcomes “the ceasefire process in Gaza as an initial step towards ending the war, unimpeded access for humanitarian aid and the immediate start of reconstruction in Gaza.”. The solution to the region’s problems involves, for both Indonesia and Brazil, the existence of two states.
