Brasília: CEB Ipes technician dies 3 days after explosion on the Esplanada

The technician at electricity distributor CEB Ipes (Companhia Energética de Brasília Iluminação Pública e Serviços SA), Raimundo Nonato do Nascimento Chaves, aged 52, died this Friday (28), after suffering severe burns to around 60% of his body, caused by the explosion at the energy substation in Block C of Esplanada dos Ministérios, last Tuesday (25).Brasília: CEB Ipes technician dies 3 days after explosion on the Esplanada

The structure is owned by the electricity distributors Neoenergia and CEB Ipes. The latter is a contractor for the company Diamante Engenharia, where the victim worked at the time of the accident.

The outsourced service provider carried out maintenance on the public lighting network, according to a note from CEB Ipes.

The distributor Neoenergia informed the Brazil Agency which was activated only to support the Federal District Military Fire Department (CBMDF), but was not involved in the accident.

Notes of regret

The Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services (MGI), responsible for the administrative management of public buildings on the Esplanada dos Ministérios, communicated its regret, support to those involved, and guarantee of cooperation with the investigations.

“We express our solidarity with family, friends and co-workers at this time of great pain. MGI reinforces its commitment to safety and care for all professionals who work around and inside public buildings under its management, and will monitor official developments relating to the incident, collaborating with the competent authorities as necessary.”

CEB Ipes also issued a note lamenting the loss. “CEB Ipes sympathizes with family, friends and colleagues in this moment of pain, expressing sincere feelings for their loss [de Raimundo Nonato do Nascimento Chaves].”

The company also states that it adopts strict safety standards and requires compliance and use of all necessary procedures and protective equipment (PPE) by service providers.

History

The Ministry of Management and Innovation (MGI) and the Military Fire Department of the Federal District reported that the explosion occurred during a routine maintenance and was caused by an electrical short circuit in the power substation.

On the day of the incident, six people were injured. The official causes of the explosion are still being investigated to issue a conclusive report.

CEB IPes says it monitors the investigations carried out by the competent authorities and the service provider.
