Madrid Spain.- Cuban boxers Kevin Brown (67 kg) and Herich Ruiz (86 kg), who deserted the national delegation during the Continental Championship held in Guayaquil, Ecuador, last March, offered statements about their decision to emigrate and their projects.
During a conversation with journalist Jorge Ebro on his television channel YoutubeKevin Brown explained that after 9 years in the national team he wanted something big for his career, something that he was not going to achieve from Cuba.
“I am no longer a child and I decided that this 2022 my career had to be outside Cuba (…) It is a very hard step, for those who have lived it and have done it, it is not a secret because you leave behind friends, family, partner . I thought about it well, and I was sure, because of the work that was going on in Cuba, because of the things that he deserved and that they did not give me,” he added. champion Boxing World Cup in Kazakhstan, 2011.
Brown related that his parents were also high-performance athletes, who were good at sports without achieving anything on the Island, and he did not want that for himself.
For his part, Herich Ruiz, bronze in the 2021 Boxing World Cup, stated that he has always had the dream of professional boxing, that he saw his former teammates from the national team triumphing outside the country and that he intends to achieve the same.
Ruizbronze in the 2021 Boxing World Cup, denounced that the Cuban Government did not pay him for his competitions in world championships.
Asked about the recent “opening” from Cuba to professional boxing, both boxers considered that they are lies from the regime, which will continue to manage the athletes and without paying most of them, as has happened with Ruiz. They are going to open with the 4 main figures but then they will not give opportunities to others, they considered.
The boxers, who are now free agents, intend to get to the United States, find a good manager to represent them and make their way into professional boxing.
“It’s a new stage that is to show myself in the professional world. I really want to be champion. I look forward to the best of my and Herich’s careers, Brown said.”
Herich, who has a small child, acknowledged that it is very difficult to be far away, but from outside Cuba he will be able to give his son and his family a better future.
Along with Kevin Brown and Herich Ruiz they emigrated of Cuba during the month of March the athletes Fernando Dayan Jorge, Olympic canoe champion in Tokyo 2020; the sailors Iris Laura Manso and Carlos Miguel Expósito; long jumper Lester Lescay; and the players Maykol Valdivia Brown, Yorelquis Hernández, Danell Figueroa and Miguel Rolando Camacho Yanes.
