Boxer Andy Cruz’s attempt to leave Cuba frustrated

Cuban boxer Andy Cruz has not left the island, according to the Cuban Boxing Federation, which has made public a statement in which he reports an “illegal exit attempt” by the Olympic champion. Last week, the Boxeo Cubano page stated that the athlete was in the Dominican Republic, news that was spread by the independent press.

The athlete’s behavior, the authorities warned in the same bulletin, “will generate the corresponding analysis, which we will inform in a timely manner.”

On Monday, rumors began to circulate on networks according to which the athlete was detained in Moa, Holguín, after trying unsuccessfully to leave Cuba. 14ymedio tried to confirm the information with sources that assured that Cruz is regulated and he cannot leave the Island except for an international competition, but he was unable to find out what his current situation is.

The version that the boxer had left Cuba was spread by the Cuban journalist residing in the US Willie Suarez on June 19, taking as a reference the diffusion of a photo in which the boxer appears next to his partner in the Dominican Republic.

The athlete’s behavior, the authorities warned in the same bulletin, “will generate the corresponding analysis, which we will inform in a timely manner”

A relative of Cruz pointed out that the image was not reliable, that although it was indeed taken in the Dominican, it could be shared on social networks while the Olympic champion was in Cuba, and that this Monday they would look for the athlete to verify if he was really detained.

Cruz, considered an outstanding figure in national boxing, was excluded from the Domadores de Cuba team, which participated last May in the Palenque de la Feria de San Marcos, in Aguascalientes (Mexico).

Before the tournament in Playa Girón, the official media Hit indicated that Andy Cruz would not be present. “He was absent from the last training days of the national team and did not travel to Camagüey”, reported the commissioner Alberto Puig de la Barca.

Andy Cruz is one of the athletes awarded by the Government of Cuba after obtaining Olympic medals in Tokyo 2020 (held in 2021 due to the pandemic).

The champions were presented with high-end cars like Mercedes-Benz last January and most of them were very grateful to the authorities and the late Fidel Castro. Another of them, the canoeist Jorge Enríquez, did succeed in leaving the Island to reach the United States in March.
