Lacalle Pou recognized the role of the State in caring for the environment
The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, participated in the inauguration of an industrial plant in which used plastic bottles will be recycled to transform them into new containers. The investment, of a private nature, coincides with the packaging recovery strategy defined by the Government. The president considered that the State must create the conditions to reconcile care of the environment and the economy.
The activity was developed with the participation of the Minister of the Environment, Robert Bouvier; the Undersecretary of Public Health, José Luis Satdjián; the mayor of Canelones, Marcelo Metediera, and representatives of the Envases company.
Lacalle Pou referred to the role of states in generating conditions to reconcile environmental care and economic benefits. “Humanity has shown that it is capable of progress. “Uruguay is a witness and main actor in this progress,” he assured. As an example, he recalled the issuance of a bond whose interest rate is associated with the fulfillment of environmental goals.
When the State assumes that role, better financing is obtained, better credits and ventures can be financed, he expressed. He also recognized the role of the private sector and mentioned the importance of investments such as the one made.
Bouvier reported that one of the strategies of the Ministry of the Environment is linked to the recovery and valorization of packaging. To this end, in 2021 a resolution was approved that establishes a series of specific goals. The standard establishes, for example, the obligation for non-returnable plastic beverage containers to include at least 40% recycled material by 2025.
The industrial plant is located in the city of Pando, department of Canelones. Its installation allows the process known as bottle to bottle (bottle to bottle), which allows you to transform a used container into a new one.
