Borrell defended including Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba in EU hemispheric summits

Josep Borrell, head of the European Union’s Foreign Relations, also called for pressure to be made to reactivate political dialogue in Venezuela. He regretted that there is talk of resuming the talks and that this step does not take place

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell. defended this Friday that Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua be included in the regional summits of the hemispheric entity and Latin America, considering that through these mechanisms greater opportunities to dialogue with these nations are generated than if it is done separately.

Borrell, from Buenos Aires and after participating in the CELAC meeting, acknowledged that there are clear differences with some countries and their governments, but that is not why we should rule out sitting down with them and talking, since that would not help improve the outlook. In that sense, he said that it is a job that requires patience and perseverance “that needs frameworks, meeting points and possibilities to express discrepancies.”

If this point is achieved, he assured that in this way pressure can be exerted so that the political dialogue can provide more real solutions to the crisis that some countries present, this in reference to the negotiating table in Mexico that has been paralyzed for more than a year after the unilateral suspension of the process by the Venezuelan ruling party.

He stated that until the end of 2023, when Spain holds the presidency of the European Council, it should be the year of Latin America in Europe and vice versa.

Previously, Josep Borrell asked to exert as much political pressure as possible to reactivate the dialogue in Mexico and criticized the announcements of the resumption of talks that never materialize.

“Negotiations are always starting and they never start. Every day we say that they are going to start and they don’t,” lamented the senior European Union official.

He recalled that the presidential elections in Venezuela “are on the horizon”, which is generating the operation of a primary mechanism for the opposition to choose a unitary candidate who will face the president, Nicolás Maduro, in the elections scheduled for the end of 2024.
