British Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed the situation in Ukraine on Sunday with French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in two bilateral meetings during the G7 summit in Germany.

Johnson and Macron agreed that “it is a critical time for the course of the conflict” and there is an opportunity to “turn the tide of the war,” according to a statement released by Downing Street. Both the British prime minister and the French president “emphasized the need to support Ukraine to strengthen its position both in the war and in any future negotiations,” the note said.

In his meeting with Trudeau, the British Conservative leader told him that “the scales of the war must be tilted in favor” of Ukraine, which means providing it with defensive weapons, training and intelligence data to repel the Russian advance. Johnson and Trudeau also welcomed the progress of negotiations launched in March for a Free Trade Agreement between the two countries, and agreed to increase cooperation in areas such as security, the British government statement said.

The two leaders stressed the need for the G7 to allocate substantial economic resources to help developing countries “to grow in an ecological and sustainable way,” the note states.
