Boric appoints a former Salvador Allende official as ambassador to Cuba

(EFE).- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile informed this Friday of the appointment of political ambassadors to Spain, the United States, Cuba and the World Trade Organization based in Switzerland, as well as career diplomats who will occupy posts in Peru and Bolivia.

The journalist from the University of Chile and former official of the Press Secretariat of the Presidency of the Government of President Salvador Allende Patricia Esquinazi will be the representative of the South American country in Cuba.

Javier Velasco, a lawyer from the University of Chile and a Master of Laws from the University of California-Berkeley, who has participated as a guest scholar at the Global Legal Studies Center of the University of Wisconsin and researcher associate for the Nucleus of Research in Biopolitics and Ideology.

President Gabriel Boric will maintain his commitment to appoint only 20% political ambassadors, after the controversy that arose after the diplomatic appointments known in March

The lawyer from the Catholic University of Chile will arrive in the United States and is a Doctor in Political Science from Princeton University Juan Gabriel Valdés, former Minister of Foreign Affairs during the government of Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle (1994-2000), permanent representative of Chile before the United Nations and ambassador of Chile in Spain, Argentina and the United States.

At the end of March, the Chilean Foreign Minister, Antonia Urrejola, indicated that President Gabriel Boric will maintain his commitment to appoint only 20% political ambassadors, after the controversy that arose after the diplomatic appointments made known that month.

“The president promised last year to continue the practice that is 80% career and 20% political (…) We are going to respect the percentage,” the minister said in a meeting with foreign correspondents.

Some appointments promoted by Boric raised questions in the right-wing opposition that accused him of “political cuoteo”, a practice that the former student leader criticized during the electoral campaign.

“What (the president) is doing is using his prerogative, appointing trusted people, there have always been political ambassadors,” said Urrejola, who was president of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in 2020.
