The Chilean President, gabriel boric, admitted that the relationship with Venezuela “is not easy.” However, the president assured that his government has “the best will” to find a solution for the more than 20,000 Venezuelan migrants that Chile seeks to deport.

«Venezuela has a very important role to play. Here it is not about escalating problems, but looking for solutions. And that is the spirit of the Chilean government,” Boric said this Thursday, March 16, in statements to the media from northern Chile.

As reported EFE, Boric noted that his administration will use “all the tools provided by international law” to address migration, which he described as a very difficult phenomenon.

Boric asked Bolivia and Venezuela on Wednesday to receive the deported migrants and announced a strengthening of security measures on the northern border to stop the irregular arrival of migrants, mainly Venezuelans from Bolivian territory..

Chile, which reinforced its border with Peru and Bolivia at the end of February with a large military contingent, has been experiencing a migration crisis for years, which spilled over in 2021.

For his part, the foreign minister, Yván Gil, countered that the government of Nicolás Maduro has not been contacted by Gabriel Boric: “”The Government of Venezuela has not yet received a request for coordinated work with (the) Government of Chile regarding alleged deportations of Venezuelans. Coordination in this matter has been a cry of ours, as well as the demand for respect for the human rights of our compatriots.

In Chile, there are 1.4 million migrants, which is equivalent to more than 7% of the population, with Venezuelans being the most numerous, followed by Peruvians, Haitians and Colombians.
