Washington. Selective operations to detain migrants who are illegally in the United States will begin next week, President-elect Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, said yesterday, indicating that the actions would involve several cities.
Asked by Fox News whether deportation raids would be carried out in several cities, including Chicago, Homan said: I wouldn’t classify them as raids. There are going to be selective law enforcement operations
.
Hours later, Homan told Washington Post that the Trump administration is reconsidering taking such actions next week, following the leaks.
The new government has not yet made a decision
said Homan, former acting director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to the report. We are studying this leak and will make a decision based on it
he added.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not immediately respond to a request for comment, Reuters reported.
The Wall Street Journall previously reported that Immigration and Customs Enforcement would host a weeklong operation in Chicago that could include hundreds of agents.
Additionally, Homan added that they pledged not to use local resources to carry out federal raids, in response to a question about how these operations would be received in so-called sanctuary cities.
The official suggested that the Trump administration would target the city’s jails to carry them out; a source told Reuters on Friday that New York and Miami would be the targets.
There are more than 700,000 illegal aliens in the United States with final orders of removal. President Trump has been clear from day one that he will secure the border and carry out the deportation operation
said.
