Illegal entry of almost 4,000 people and the completion of some 200 crimes were prevented
The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, received, yesterday, Thursday 16, at the Executive Tower, the Defense Minister, Javier García, who evaluated the surveillance tasks on the border with Brazil. In the last three years, the troops prevented people who tried to enter illegally from entering, he reported. In another order, he announced that the department that he directs collaborates with OSE to distribute water in Minas.
“I expressed to the president the importance of the task,” García declared, at a press conference, after the meeting with the president, referring to the tasks carried out since 2020 by the Uruguayan military to guard the dry border with Brazil.
In the three years that this action took place, the forces prevented the illegal entry of some 3,700 people. In addition, they prevented some 180 crimes, such as smuggling and rustling, and made the seizure of weapons and substances, he added.
The hierarch also specified that the troops carried out more than 1,000,000 revisions, among which there was “not one complaint for something that could mean an abuse of functions.” “Not only was the task done, but it was done with excellent professionalism and attitude,” he noted.
Defense complements the surveillance work with the Police, the National Customs Directorate and the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP). It is a task that has given very good results, because the State is present in places where it had never been before, along the 1,000-kilometer border with Brazil, he indicated.
In another order, García confirmed that this Thursday the 16th began, together with the OSE, the distribution of water in the department of Lavalleja, one of the most affected by the water deficit. The entity provides the tanker trucks and Defense, the army drivers who will man the vehicles, he explained.
The operation consists of eight daily trips, six to the city of Minas and two to Solís de Mataojo. It is estimated that some 240,000 liters of water per day will be distributed, the minister explained.
