Former Colorado senator Pedro Bordaberry has generated controversy in recent weeks by changing his mind about the government and the decisions made in the Presidency of the Republic, especially in relation to the well-known Marset case. Bordaberry, who is considered by many in his party as a possible candidate for the presidency in 2024, went from defending the actions of President Luis Lacalle Pou to requesting the resignation of Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo, according to his latest column published in El País. .

In the column, Bordaberry questioned that the Undersecretary of Foreign Relations, Carolina Ache, was the only political person responsible for the fact that the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the Interior granted a passport to the drug trafficker Sebastián Marset in November 2021, despite the fact that both portfolios They had exchanged information about Marset’s criminal record since this man had requested the documentation while he was imprisoned in the United Arab Emirates for carrying an apocryphal Paraguayan passport.

Bordaberry stated that there were at least three “officials (who) knew that Marset was a drug trafficker a month and a half before the Ministry of the Interior told the undersecretary about it.” She also assured that the director of Consular Affairs reported the matter by email to the Secretary of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and that this minister was also informed. According to Bordaberry, Ache was held responsible for not communicating something that the minister and the directors already knew.

In addition, Bordaberry suggested that Ache did not need to join the opposition and point out that Bustillo was aware of all the details about Marset at the time of granting the passport because “they would have accused her of being disloyal.” Finally, he wondered who was responsible and he remains in his position as if nothing had happened.
